Press Release 07.08.2024

Latest special coin to be issued: "200 years of the SSV" gold coin in honour of 200th anniversary

On 16 August 2024, the Federal Mint Swissmint will launch the "200 years of the SSV" gold coin, the second coin in the two-part series to honour the Swiss Shooting Sport Federation. Sales of the highly limited special coin will begin during the anniversary celebration.

Swissmint produces exclusive limited-edition collector coins under the name "Swiss special coins". The "200 years of the SSV" special coin is the second in this two-part series, following the "Swiss Shooting Sport Federation" silver coin that was launched last year. With it, Swissmint pays homage to the Swiss Shooting Sport Federation, which will celebrate its 200th anniversary from 16 to 18 August 2024. The Swiss Shooting Sport Federation is one of the oldest sports federations in Switzerland. It was founded during the first federal shooting festival in Aarau in 1824, under the name "Swiss Shooting Association". Today, the SSV has around 130,000 members and comprises some 2,600 shooting clubs, making it the fifth-largest sports federation in Switzerland.

The special coins bring our country's history and memories to life

The "200 years of the SSV" special coin in 900 gold alloy weighs 11.29g and depicts a target on the obverse. "For the gold coin, we wanted to create a design that is as straightforward as possible and is fitting for the SSV. We are confident that we have once again hit the bullseye with collectors", jokes Jan Niklas Betz, Deputy General Manager and Head of Marketing/Sales at Swissmint. The reverse features the coat of arms of the Swiss shooting thaler, which was minted in 1842 to celebrate the shooting festival in Chur and can also be seen on the 2023 silver coin. In addition, the nominal value of CHF 50 is depicted. 4,800 coins will be issued in proof quality and a further 200 coins will be offered with an artist's certificate.

The gold coin will go on sale at 7pm on Friday, 16 August, at the anniversary celebration, as well as in Swissmint's official webshop. To crown the celebrations, Federal Councillor Albert Rösti is expected to visit the Schachen festival grounds in Aarau on Sunday, 18 August.
